“Mei! Quick! Grandfather is in this cell!” Yun whispered as he flitted in and out of the moonlight.
“Mei? Yun? Is that you?” Grandfather asked.
“Shhhh … I’m picking this lock.” Mei said softly as she took a hairpin from her hair and jiggled it. Click! The door opened and out came grandfather. Mei and Yun cried with relief as they ran forward to hug him.
“Quick, the guards are stirring!” Yun cried, dragging Mei and grandfather along to where the cloud and the Jade Rabbit were waiting outside. The trio landed on the cloud and as Mei waved her fingers, the cloud moved away from the imperial palace.
Feeling the cool wind on their faces, Yun fought the urge to shout, “Yes! Grandfather is finally back with us!” He turned to grandfather and asked instead, “Grandfather…?”
“Yes, Yun?” Grandfather inquired, stroking Yun’s hair.
“Grandfather, please teach us how to make your delicious mooncakes! We want to eat them!” Mei interrupted Yun. Bursting into laughter, grandfather agreed as they made their way home.
