That night, the twins hatched a plan. They would bake a batch of Grandpa’s mooncakes and bring them to the emperor. However, this batch would be missing his secret ingredient, as he had never told them what it was. Without the secret ingredient, they had a slim chance of impressing the emperor.
At dawn, they set out for the emperor’s palace. They had a basket of mooncakes with them. As they walked through a forest, they heard a rustling. They whipped around to see a rabbit, with snow-white fur, standing behind them.
“You’re never going to save your grandfather without his secret ingredient,” the Jade Rabbit said. Mei and Yun were in awe of the magical being. The Jade Rabbit said, “I can give you the secret ingredient, if you can answer just one riddle.”
They agreed.
“I am something great that comes from within, an act or deed that inspires a grin. I bring with me a feeling of cheer — lessening the trouble and replacing the fear. I need no thank you, I ask for no pay — I only wish to brighten your day. What am I?”
“Do you remember all the times we’ve helped out the villagers? And how we felt?” Mei asked. The answer dawned on Yun. “Kindness!” the twins chorused.
The Jade Rabbit smiled. It gave them a pot of the secret ingredient, which turned out to be moon powder.
That night, Mei and Yun went back to their village. With Grandpa at their side.
