ART SPEAKS TO ME

From: Sarah, Pri 5, Holy Innocents’ Primary

When I first saw the empty burger, I was curious as to why the fish burger did not contain any fish. I was shocked when I read the explanation. I did not know that we ate so many fish that breeding populations became too depleted to recover. I think the artwork Singapore artist Brenda Tan made is a very innovative to teach Singaporeans about the depleting fish populations. I would tell my friends about the depletion of fish populations and will eat less fish products to play my part.

When I first saw this “Filet-No-Fish” picture, I thought that the artist was discouraging kids from eating unhealthy food. But, after I read the explanation, I realised that she was talking about overfishing. Never in my mind did I think that the world is having this overfishing problem. I always thought that we have enough for the world’s consumption.

When I think of overfishing, I feel like the world is running low on fish and they are about to become extinct. I think that the world should reduce the number of fishes being fished out of the ocean, be it by fishermen or people doing it for leisure. Perhaps, people can think about eating less seafood and meat, and instead, eat more plant-based food.

In this case of “Filet-No-Fish”, maybe we can replace the fish with something else. For example, plant-based food, vegetarian burger, etc. By eating plant-based food, not only can we reduce eating meat, we can consume healthier food and save the world.

I now understand that overfishing is a very big problem, and we need to do something about it. I hope that all of us can reduce fishing as soon as possible because by 2048, the ocean will have no more fishes. Oh no! I hope I can still see fishes when I grow up. I will be 36 years old by then.

This poster has successfully caught my attention and I think this artist is very creative. In my humble opinion, if I were to add to the design, I will add a drawing of a big fish with a speech bubble. The speech bubble will say, “My fish family population is greatly reducing, and we are about to be extinct. Please do not overfish and overeat me.”

My first impression was that the burger would be very plain if there was no more fish left after overfishing. I felt bad that overfishing is a problem that threatens marine life in the oceans and the poster clearly shows the consequence of doing so. The breeding population of fish is getting depleted quickly and it is a serious problem.

I think art can help kids be aware of overfishing better because it helps them have a clearer understanding of the issue by relating it to the fish burger. In order to make others understand the seriousness of the problem, the artist has also written “2048, COMING SOON” at the bottom. The poster surely does a good job of catching my attention and I am very curious to learn more about the issue.

I think the artist has done a great job in conveying the message, but I think she could have made the “2048, COMING SOON” a bit darker and bigger so that it catches readers’ attention quickly. Finally, I really hope people around the world will understand the importance of this issue and take action to prevent overfishing. Surely, you would also not want the population of fish to go extinct due to overfishing, would you?

The first time I saw the empty burger, I was confused. I had seen advertisements featuring this juicy-looking burger. After reading the explanation, I began to understand. Overfishing is a problem faced by many nations. It would be helpful if artists were to create more posters like “Filet-no-Fish”.

I believe that schools should display more posters like this to remind students of our diminishing ecosystem. Other than overfishing, there are more problems around the world such as pollution, global warming, overpopulation, and deforestation.

I feel like the artist had a good idea to make this picture. The blank background made the burger pop out more. At the bottom of the picture, the words in yellow say that “Filet-no-Fish” is coming in 2048. I can tell that the artist is trying to show a message in this picture.

I would like to see a collection of images like this showing other environmental problems such as pollution, global warming, overpopulation, and deforestation.

Overfishing is a problem that needs to be stopped. If we do not take action to protect our environment, it will be lost in the future. One small difference can change the world. So, shall we start taking care of the environment?

“Filet-No-Fish” is an interesting and eye-catching poster as it draws my attention to the missing fillet! This poster delivers the impression of a shortage of fish in our food source in the distant yet near future. Can you imagine eating a fish burger without fish? I certainly can’t!

Over the years, populations of fishes have started to drop drastically as a result of overfishing. Human population increases steadily over the years. As a result, demand for fishes as a food source also increases over time. Fish stocks collapse and can take decades to recover, threatening livelihoods. Fishermen will lose their jobs in years to come if this problem continues to exist.

We can do our part to not only save the fishes but also the fishing industry by reducing our dependence on them. Overfishing, to many people, sound like nothing but a good old fish tale. We must take action now and not kick the can down the road!
