Finding courage

From: Diya, Pri 6, Bukit View Primary School

My heart was pounding loudly in my chest. I stood frozen, beads of sweat rolling down my face. My classmate, Tim, was being bullied once again. The bullies were sneering and making snide comments at him. I could not bear to watch it. On the other hand, I was a person who tries their best to avoid being the next target. “Should I help him?” I thought. A fierce battle was ongoing in my head. In the end, I decided to do the right thing.

“Stop it, that is not nice, ” I said, my voice trembling. The bully turned to me, looking surprised. Then, he sneered at me. But, I did not back down. Instead, I repeated myself, more loudly this time. Others began to speak up as well. The bully eventually walked away, unable to face the crowd. Tim heaved a sigh of relief and then thanked me.

I realised that having courage isn’t about being brave or fearless but standing up for what you think is right, especially when no one else will, no matter how hard it is.
