Finding courage

From: Yongkang, Pri 6, Horizon Primary School

Standing up for others is a courageous act that transcends words — it’s a testament to empathy and humanity. It starts with noticing the quiet struggles of those around us, the moments when someone’s voice is drowned out or their dignity is threatened. It’s in these moments that our choices define us: whether to step forward or stand by.

I recall a time in school when a classmate was being ridiculed for their accent. Their eyes darted downward as laughter filled the room. It wasn’t right. Summoning my courage, I spoke up — pointing out how their uniqueness added richness to our classroom. The laughter faded, replaced by thoughtful silence. Later, that classmate thanked me, sharing that it was the first time someone had stood up for them.

Taking a stand isn’t always easy. It might mean challenging the status quo or risking disapproval, but the impact can be profound. Standing up isn’t about grand gestures — it’s about doing what’s right, even when no one’s watching. In helping others rise, we rise too —becoming agents of hope, bravery, and kindness. Moments like these remind us that every voice matters.
