Since Peter’s parents do not tell him what is wrong with Hammy, he can do some research to find out what she is suffering from. Based on the symptoms described in the story, it is likely that Hammy has dementia.
Here are the ways to help a family member with dementia:
1. Be patient with Hammy. Understand that her forgetfulness is part of her illness and that it could worsen.
2. Engage Hammy in activities such as brisk walking, dancing, and board games to keep her mind and body active.
3. Talk to Hammy often. Engage her in conversation to show her that the family cares.
4. Label places at home that she often goes to (e.g. bedroom, bathroom) so she can find her way around.
5. Paste a label on each cupboard and drawer so Hammy can find things easily.
6. Paste contact details of all family members near the telephone so Hammy can call them when she needs help.
7. Peter and his family members can take turns to accompany Hammy when she needs to go out so she does not get lost.
8. Make sure Hammy gets plenty of rest so she does not get tired easily.
