Disbelief. My mind almost couldn’t function at the thought of Anthea leaving us. Especially with Myron and Matron getting older. A tear rolled down my cheek. I had to do something. She meant everything to us. I couldn’t just sit down and watch her leave us.
Then, I recalled what Matron had told us about the ogress moving into the abandoned farm. She shared how the town library and the school had mysteriously burnt down, and how the park was swallowed up by a giant sinkhole. This was the reason why everyone thought of the town as a dark and dangerous place.
Surely there would be a logical explanation for all the incidents that had taken place, right? We cannot just assume it was the ogress. Maybe if I made sense of all the incidents, the town would return to being a safe, kind, and lovely place. We could play with other children, make friends, talk, and visit our neighbours, and best of all, Anthea would get to stay!
After a lot of deliberation, I decided that I was going to have to make the journey to the ogress on the abandoned farm … alone. I knew it was a dangerous journey, but I couldn’t risk anyone else getting hurt or injured. I quickly filled a bag with all the things I might need and tiptoed out of the house and into the darkness. I hoped I would make it back before anyone found out. If they did, they would surely flip!
