IF I WERE THE AUTHOR

“Silence!” thundered the Dragon Queen. “Your people have forgotten how to care for my ocean. You all keep taking without giving back.”

Jung shivered. Then she noticed something hanging around the Dragon Queen’s neck. It was a silver compass with the letters M.J. engraved on it.

“That compass belongs to my mother!” Jung exclaimed.

The Dragon Queen nodded. “Your mother didn’t drown,” she said gently. “She risked her life to save a baby dragon during a terrible storm. She chose to stay here and protect the ocean.”

Tears filled Jung’s eyes. She had always thought her mother was gone, but now she knew how brave she had been. Taking a deep breath, Jung stepped forward. “I’m still afraid of the sea, but I want to be brave like my mother. I’ll help my people understand why we must protect the ocean.”

The Dragon Queen smiled. “Then yet there is hope.” At once, the storm disappeared. When Jung returned to shore, her fear was gone. She was ready to carry on her mother’s legacy and protect the sea she loved.
