Letter to the Mayor

From: Lea, Pri 4, St Anthony’s Canossian Primary School

Dear Mayor,

My name is June. I am writing to ask for your help. A while back, my father died in an accident. Since then, my mother has been staying in bed all day. As a result, she lost her job and we all had to move out of our apartment. We moved to Huey House, the house for the homeless. At first, it seemed uncomfortable. There were so many rules. But gradually, I became comfortable living in this little house. I made some friends, Tyrell, Jeremiah, and Lulu. Together, our families managed to settle down.

However, we were recently told of a new policy that all families will be moved out after three months whether we were ready or not. Mayor, you need to help us! Can you imagine what will happen to us? We will become homeless, roaming the streets and seeking shelter on the porches of people’s houses. Can you really bear for this to happen? Are we not a community? A true community will support one another.

My mother is still recovering. Lulu’s mother is training to qualify as a hairdresser. Tyrell’s mother is still looking for a job. We are all trying our best to become independent, but we need time. The other residents in Huey House are struggling to cope too. To us residents, Huey House is home. Please Mayor, step in to remove this new ruling. This will give us the time we need.

Regards,
June
