Alyce looked at the Mad Hatter’s shaking hands and realised the war was like a giant, grumpy cloud. “We can’t fight shadows with swords,” she said. “We have to use colour!”
She grabbed the March Hare’s “war spoons” and started drumming a silly beat on the table. She told the Dormouse to sing his absurd song about twinkling bats. Soon, the Red Queen’s scary soldiers didn’t look like guards anymore — they just looked like flat pieces of cardboard. Alyce showed the Hatter how to fold the “soldiers” into paper planes. They launched them into the air, and the planes turned into bright butterflies that chased the grey mists away.
When Alyce woke up in her quiet, empty room, she didn’t feel lonely. She found her mum and grandma and told them all about the butterfly planes. As they laughed together, the house felt warm again. Alyce realised that even if her toys were gone, her imagination was a magic shield that no war could ever break.
